SIGHTS OF KAPOSVÁR

Discover the sights of Kaposvár, located only 25 km from Igal.

Rippl-Rónai Memorial House and Visitor Center

One of the most famous monuments in Kaposvár is undoubtedly the Rippl-Rónai villa, where József Rippl-Rónai, one of the most outstanding figures of Hungarian impressionist painting, lived and worked from 1915 until his death. The building is located in the part of the city called Rómahegy, however, it is definitely worth taking the short trip from the city center, as the sumptuous yellow villa, emerging from the chestnut trees, offers a sight that fits a fairy tale. The rooms of the building, which functions as a memorial museum, perfectly reflect the original conditions with the artist's own furniture and more than 80 pictures, and with their help we can easily get to know the world-famous artist's everyday life.

Main square

As in the case of many cities, the main square of the city, Kossuth tér, cannot be avoided in Kaposvár. On the square, which was renovated in 2003, the most beautiful, eclectic and Art Nouveau buildings are lined up next to each other. Here you can find the imposing Neo-Renaissance building of the Town Hall, the Erzsébet Szálló decorated with Zsolnay tiles, and the Lajos Kossuth statue created by the sculptor János Kopits from Kaposvár. The charming square, decorated with flowers, is also full of catering units, so it is a good choice if you want to have an ice cream or a coffee on warm days.

City park

The wooded area, which is also referred to as the lungs of the city, is very popular among the locals, as it is a perfect place for relaxation and there are many opportunities for sports. No one will be bored in the park, which is only a 10-minute walk from the city center, as the youngest can explore the playground, the older ones the roller park or the parkour track, and the adults can take a walk around the various monuments and statues in the park. One of the jewels of the Városliget is Malom-tó, in the middle of which there is a small island that can be reached via a cozy wooden bridge.

Vaszary smart park

The city's first smart and environmentally conscious park was handed over in 2019, which is an exciting innovation from several points of view, since the energy needs of public lighting are provided by solar lamps, and there are many places for relaxation in its area. Visitors can tour the park complete with fountains, a lake, sunbeds and hammocks, and learn more about the local wildlife through devices that can be activated with a smart device.

Assumption Cathedral

When visiting the city, you should not miss one of the largest churches in the country: the Cathedral of Our Lady, which serves as one of the symbols of the city, was built in 1886 in the neo-Romanesque style, but a smaller wooden church stood in its place from 1702. The robust building is not only amazing from the outside, but also hides countless eye-catching parts inside. One of the biggest highlights of the interior is a Madonna from the Baroque era, but the altars, the holy water containers made of marble and the colored glass windows are also wonderful. In front of the church stands the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, which is the oldest statue in the city.

Gergely Csiky Theatre

Kaposvár's theater owes its popularity not only to its wide repertoire and acclaimed performances, as the Art Nouveau building built in 1911 is impressive in itself. The building, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, was renovated in the 1980s, and at the same time the park surrounding the building was tidied up. The program includes both prose and musical plays, as well as children's performances, and in addition, the troupe places great emphasis on promoting the institution among young people during various programs and events.
